Convention Talk - Forgive Me

My husband says the conventions are 'theatre.' I agree and I love it :).

1) Favorite button of the night: "Sarah Palin - Hottest VP from the Coldest State."

2) Favorite Speech: Rudy G. -- Just listen to it or read it here. He dropped the hammer. Still laughing. And Palin wasn't too shabby either.

3) Favorite Quote by Palin: "I guess a small time mayor is like a community organizer. . except that you have actual responsibilities."

And best quote by Huckabee: He said the media's coverage of the Palin family was, "tackier than a costume change at a Madonna concert."

Okay, and one more because I can't resist (Rudy):

"When Russia rolled over Georgia, John McCain knew exactly how to respond.

Having been to that part of the world many times and having developed a clear worldview over many years, John knew where he stood. Within hours, he established a very strong, informed position that let the world know exactly how he'll respond as President. At exactly the right time, John McCain said, "We're all Georgians."

Obama's first instinct was to create a moral equivalency - that "both sides" should "show restraint." The same moral equivalency that he has displayed in discussing the Palestinian Authority and the State of Israel.

Later, after discussing it with his 300 foreign policy advisors, he changed his position and suggested that the "the UN Security Council," could find a solution. Apparently, none of his 300 advisors told him that Russia has a veto on any UN action. Finally Obama put out a statement that looked ...well, it looked a lot like John McCain's.

Here's some free advice: Sen. Obama, next time just call John McCain."

You gotta love the conventions. Kind of mean but pure comedy. I have to admit this convention just brings up the question again in my mind "How did Obama get where he is?" Not to say that he isn't educated and isn't a smart man, because he is. But really, that's all he is, educated. . . he hasn't done anything noteworthy or just anything, so how did he get to be the Democratic nominee? Please, someone tell me. . (without being rude). Charisma isn't enough to recommend someone for the highest office in the United States of America.

My jaw dropped when he said Obama was a community organizer and people started laughing. Are you kidding me? A community organizer, if the republican leaders are as ignorant as they pretend to be, is a catalyst for poor people to come together and fight for their rights. We're talking about the stuff patriotic Americans should be proud can happen in their country. He was helping people come together and and be a force so that their government had to pay attention to them.

That said, Palin is obviously a fantastic pick and I'm really interested to see how this all unfolds.

I have to say though, I saw the Hottest VP from the Coldest State and smiled, but then I saw a few more referring to the "hot chick" and I started feeling kind of uncomfortable. Obviously the people wearing the buttons don't intend to be demeaning, but it still bugs.

Mary, thank you for reminding me why you are my favorite cousin. Wow, that was great. Unfortunately we have been traveling a little and I did not get to view the event. But thanks to you I got everything I needed from this post. In terms of my points of view, you nailed it, you got them all for me. I think Whit and I may now move out near you guys in VA for this post alone!

Mary, what turned me into an Obamacan is basically a while back I watched the movie "Sicko" and changed political parties. Total 180 from working for Hatch and being strong Republican all my life. The thing I think Obama has going for him is that he is less tied to (evil) corporations (health insurance companies). I feel like the health insurance mess is like in the Book of Mormon "grinding on the face of the poor." His book, Audacity of Hope has a great premise- that our country's leaders have stopped listening to the actual people & voters & are just tied to the wealthy lobbyists. I honestly believe that's what messed up the Iraq war, and that's what is making the rich richer & the poor poorer. There are a bunch of other policies that I have just gotten sick of, as well. Total 180!!!!!! Will you still be my friend? :)

Here are 2 of my blogposts where I'm figuring some of this out:

Hey Mary, I too have to disagree with you about Obama (and Palin for that matter). I think it is precisely that Obama has such a fine mind that makes me think he'll do a great job as president. He sees the critical nuances in the big issues that are facing the country. He is able to analyze and synthesize information and see problems from more than one perspective. I think that ability will produce better outcomes than one that is based on misguided "gut" instincts.
And Palin is totally unqualified to be a heartbeat away from the highest office in the land. As far as I can tell, charisma and telegenics are ALL she has going for her. She lit up the convention with some well timed digs at the Democrats but really, what does she know about 1) the economy 2) health care reform 3) foreign policy/international relations (she didn't even have a passport until 2007 for crying out loud). She may be a "supermom" but she is a scary pick for the #2 spot.

Sorry if this is sounding strident. Can we still be friends?

Nikolai looks cute on his way to school. Ollie started school last week, too. He loved the first day but then yesterday all the kids were crying when I dropped him off so he got upset, too. We'll see how tomorrow goes.

How did I end up with so many lefty friends :)? I don't agree with you, but I also wouldn't trade a one of you.
